The Story Behind Tillman Equity
From Fortune 500 boardrooms to nonprofit boardrooms — how our CEO’s journey became the foundation for a firm that serves the organizations everyone else overlooks.

Our CEO Spent 20 Years Making Sure Billion-Dollar Companies Got Their Numbers Right. Then She Found Her Real Mission.
For more than two decades, our CEO Trina Nichols worked as an internal auditor for a Fortune 500 company. Her job was to dig into the details — financial statements, compliance protocols, internal controls, risk assessments. She was the person who made sure every dollar was accounted for and every process could withstand scrutiny.
She was good at it. She built a career on it. She earned her MBA along the way.
But something was missing.
She kept seeing the same thing in her community: small nonprofits and churches doing life-changing work on shoestring budgets, run by passionate people who poured everything into their mission. They were feeding families, mentoring kids, sheltering the homeless, serving their congregations. And when it came time to apply for grants — the funding that could take their work to the next level — they hit a wall.
The proposals were too complicated. The budgets didn’t meet funder requirements. The financial documentation wasn’t there. And the consultants who could help? They only wanted to work with the big organizations that already had six-figure budgets.
Trina knew she could help. Not just with the writing — but with the financial foundation that makes funders say yes and keep saying yes.
In 2017, she made the leap. She founded Tillman Equity and built a team of grant strategists and financial analysts dedicated to helping small nonprofits and faith-based organizations get grant-ready, write winning proposals, and build the financial systems that earn funder trust. Since then, our team has helped secure over $2 million in grant funding for more than 20 organizations.
And we’re just getting started.
This Firm Exists Because Every Mission Deserves a Fair Shot at Funding
Trina named this company Tillman Equity for a reason. Equity means fairness. It means making sure the playing field is level — that a startup nonprofit with a powerful mission gets the same quality of grant support as a large institution with a development department.
Too many small organizations lose out on funding — not because their work isn’t worthy, but because they don’t have the resources, templates, or guidance to present themselves the way funders expect. That’s not a mission problem. That’s an access problem.
Tillman Equity closes that gap.
We make professional-grade grant strategy, financial compliance, and nonprofit consulting accessible to the organizations that need it most — at price points that respect their budgets.
What Our Team Brings to the Table
Fortune 500 Financial Rigor
Our leadership team brings twenty-plus years of internal auditing at a Fortune 500 company. When our analysts prepare a grant budget or set up your financial controls, we’re applying the same standards that govern billion-dollar organizations — scaled to fit yours.
MBA-Level Strategic Thinking
Grants aren’t just about good writing. They’re about strategy — understanding what funders want, positioning your organization to meet those expectations, and building a sustainable funding pipeline. Our CEO’s MBA training and business acumen shape every recommendation we make.
Proven Grant Writing Success
Since 2017, our team has helped secure over $2 million in grants for 20+ organizations across the nonprofit and faith-based sectors. Our grant writers have produced proposals for government agencies, private foundations, and faith-based funders. We know what gets funded — and why.
A Heart for Small Organizations
We didn’t choose to work with large institutions. We chose to work with the small nonprofits, the church ministries, and the startup organizations that are often doing the most important work with the fewest resources. That’s not a business limitation — it’s our mission.
If This Sounds Like You, You’re in the Right Place
You’re a small nonprofit trying to grow beyond individual donations and into grant funding, but you’re not sure where to start or whether you’re ready.
You’re a brand-new organization — maybe your 501(c)(3) is still pending or just approved — and you want to build things right from the beginning instead of scrambling later.
You’re a church or faith-based ministry exploring grants for the first time and wondering what’s available, what’s allowed, and how to navigate the process without compromising your mission.
You’re a passionate founder who’s great at the mission work but knows the financial and administrative side needs to get stronger before funders will take a chance.
You’re tired of guessing and ready for a clear, step-by-step plan to become grant-ready and start winning funding.
If any of that resonates — welcome. You’re exactly who we built this firm for.
How We Work: Honest, Practical, and Always in Your Corner
We tell you the truth. If your organization isn’t ready for a grant, we’ll tell you — and then we’ll show you exactly what to fix. We’d rather help you get ready than watch you waste time on a proposal that won’t succeed.
We meet you where you are. Whether you need a $27 template to get started or a $3,000 done-for-you package to cross the finish line, we’ve built options for every stage and every budget.
We build your capacity. Our goal isn’t to create dependency. Every template, every consultation, every engagement is designed to make your organization stronger and more capable over time. We want you to outgrow us — that means we did our job.
We keep it simple. The nonprofit world has enough jargon and complexity. We explain things in plain language, give you clear action steps, and make sure you actually understand what you’re doing and why.
